Smooth Sailing In The Bahamas |
Crystal Blues will depart from Great Sail Cay, in the Abacos, Bahamas, early tomorrow morning. Right now we're sailing WNW across the top of Little Abaco Island, in brisk (25 knot) south easterly winds. Its a sleigh ride, smooth and quick with just a tiny staysail set and we're over 6.0 knots of boat speed.
The passage to the Chesapeake should take just over 4 days, subject to winds and the ever present Gulf Stream current. We'll clear in to the USA in Norfolk, and then head up to Reedville in Virginia for a break.
Obviously, your post is a year old ... hopefully your trip was pleasant and "unremarkable". We're planning on making same trip (sailing from Boat Harbour, in Marsh Harbour) to Annapolis, in about 6 weeks. My first off-shore experience, other than sailing our boat from Ft. Lauderdale to Abacos this past December. Looking forward to the experience, albeit a little anxious. My husband and I have been sailing for over 10 years, but like I said ... I'm reading everything I can get my hands on r/t navigation, weather, etc. Any other advice??
ReplyDeleteYes our trip was "unremarkable", the best sort of passage. The Gulf Stream was a fabulous ride north, make sure you don't have any head winds on the way as it makes for a very lumpy and uncomfortable passage. Listen to Chris Parker's weather reports, he is very knowledgeable on the Gulf Stream.
